Q: How often should I have my eyes examined?
A: The correct answer to this question varies with you or your family's eye
health history. For example, if you have a history of diabetes in your family, you should consider having your eyes
examined annually, even if you have never had any visual signs or symptoms. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes,
you should have your eyes examined at least annually, regardless of any visual signs or symptoms. In general, if you
have ever needed the aid of a spectacle or contact lens correction, the American Optometric Association recommends you have
a comprehensive eye examination once a year. If you are a contact lens wearer, you must have an annual eye
exam in order to obtain a new contact lens prescription. There are many medical and legal issues which form the basis
for the recommendation of an annual eye examination, but the underlying goal is to provide a reasonable schedule in regards
to the ocular health and safety of our patients.
