Diabetic Eye Exams

diabetic

An eye examination with a focus on complications that result from diabetes is suggested for those who have been diagnosed with diabetes or borderline diabetes, even if they have not noticed any changes in their vision. Fluctuations of a patient’s blood sugar may not be immediately evident to the patient, but can often cause physical changes within the eyes.

During a diabetic eye examination, the patient’s eyes will be checked for retinopathy (retinal tissue damage and/or hemorrhaging), as well as other retinal defects that may go undetected without the dilated examination. The best way to prevent many of these complications is to have one’s eyes examined annually.
